We have had a slight hiccup with this section of the website, losing feedback messages left since 24 November (about 6 messages in all). There is also a problem with the double display of the form which is used to leave a message. Hopefully, if you fill in just the FIRST form, it will work OK. Darrell H

Well it's obvious who the stayers and handlers are over in the West. Well done to the fab four, but next time we are in Coffs Mel, lets make sure someone is home before we wake up the whole neighbourhood.

In answer to Maurie Rose (posting on 16 November), I thought there were 1000 registered Greenies then, but I had a couple of DOUBLE ENTRIES. The correct figure now is that shown on the front page and is a count directly from our MySQL database. This database will NOT allow double-entries.

I should also mention regarding the Mortar MK10 that the training weapon fitted in HMAS Watson was a most useful device for distracting water skiers who came around the head of Watsons bay - we only used reduced charges of course.

Just a few memory stirrers reading the list -- or just thoughts that occured. Were not the sets 170, 176, 177 prefixed with AS/xxx the AS/ being I think standing for Anti-Submarine which prompts me to say I don't think we had 'SONAR' until the introduction of the VDS. Prior to that they were all ASDIC sets - that is acronim for Anti Submarine Detection Investigation Committee. also regarding the AS170/177 I seem to remember they were tied to the AS Mortar Mk10 ,another number seems to creep in when talking about the VDS and that is AN/SQS504 ???? for someone else to ponder!! All the best and regards H-T

We had 32 Greenies get together at the Port Adelaide Naval Association this afternoon for the six-monthly Meet & Greet. We had one visitor from Perth - "Beatles" Bailey who still hasn't got home from the Coffs Harbour Re-union and there were 12 apologies. In keeping with the multi-cultural society that we live in these days we even allowed "Darkie" Henwood to bring along his brother Norm Henwood who was a Chief Cox'n! Those in attendance. John Bolton, Gene Boron, John Bushell, Michael Cain, Roy Collins, Kim Daw, Gary Gosden, Doug Haskings, Darkie Henwood, Norm Holden, Bill Hollas, Jeff Howlett, Rock Hudson, Bob Kearvell, Bob KIng, Tony Mackereth, Mal Magor, Trevor McKerlie, Bob McLean, Ian Peterson, Dave Potterat, Bob Reidy, Chris Rowe, Rolly Rowland, Geoff Salkeld, John Saywell, Rod Spotswood, Gordon Stringer, Bill Swan, Alan Tassel, Graham Watson, Mike Witcher. Apologies were received from. Brian Alstrom, Wally Birch, Gary Blake, Ian Eglinton, Ray Kemp, Gary Lang, Masher Manson, Paul Normandale, Blue Reidy, Mini Shuttleworth, Ed Skubala and Andrew Zeppel. As always a great time was had by all. Those of us that were lucky enough to attend the Coffs Re-union were able to share the experience. Photos of the day have been sent to the web-master for posting onto the M&G Page. John Bolton

Under Radar Sets and Displays: M44 should read M22 and it was retrofitted to Parramatta,Yarra, Stuart and Derwent M44 was a conical scan radar system used to control the Seacat Missile system on Swan and Torrens. Under Weapons: GWS20, employing visual guidance of the Seacat missile system was the RANs first missile sytem and used for close range defence on Parramatta, Yarra, Stuart and Derwent (later in conjunction with M44, on Swan and Torrens).

The description for the equipment M44 is not strickly true. M22 GFCS was originally fitted to Swan, Torrens Vampire and Vendetta & West Head. The M22 was the Gun Fire Control System on these ships incorporated both a search radar used for target acquisition and a Mono Pulse tracking radar used for target tracking and used in association with the M22 Fire Control Computer directed the 4.5 inch guns. This was updated in the Mid 70 'ys and fitted to Parramatta , Derwent and one other The M44 MFCS was the radar system used on Swan & Torrens and Cerberus and was used to direct the Seacat Missile System with the aimer seated in the director.

Hi all, so glad to see so many people attend the great greeenies reunion. and I remembered a few of them. This was the first reunion I have been to, so it is hard for me to compare it to others, but if they were anything like this one, I have missed out on a lot of good things. As Secretary/Treasurer of a local Social Club for 14 years I well understand the amount of work that went into organising the event, many congatulations to the organisers BIG Effort and a really tremendous result. I visited Lyle "Charlie" "Beachball" Brown on Sunday afternoon in Ballina. He sends his best wishes to all. Had a second bypass operation pre XMAS. His wife was ill otherwise he would have made it. Give him a call on 02 6683 4001 Les "Bull" Lever

"Fantastic".Nothing more need be said other than to give the organising commitee Lou & my heartfelt thanks for a great weekend. Food for thought, the Navy is due for it's 100th anniversary in 2011. A Greenies reunion in that year as part of the oficial program may be worth thinking about. Only problem with that is I as I'm sure many others won't want to wait that long which makes 2008 a good year for the next reunion. Your thoughts? Cheers Kim.

What an amazing thing it is to re-kindle friendships left unattended for so many years. Heartfelt thanks to the organizers for giving me that opportunity. Can anyone give me the contact of the excellent band that entertained us? When I return to Melbourne (end of this month) I will prepare a photographic CD of the event at minimal cost (approx 150 images)if there is any interest. (Let me know). Also in what form (email or posted CD) and what image size is required for images to be posted on this site? For those who missed this reunion, the only advice I could offer is definately don't miss the next one!

Dress for the dinner dance is NEAT CASUAL i.e. slacks (long trousers) shirt with a collar shoes and socks. We are in Coffs so if you are from the Northern areas choose a suitable jacket if you feel it necesary. If from southern areas forget the jacket. You will all need to attend the registration am on the Saturday. So get the feel of the place. Dress needs to meet club expectations and that is the bottom line. Any thing above this is up to individuals (we don't do rig of the day these days). Any further questions can avoid a chat page debate by addressing them through my email address on the web site or by calling 0266582562 Regards Wayne Secretary.

The rig for dinner dances at almost any ex-pussers reunion is usually NEAT CASUAL, as long as it meets the host club's dress rules.

It has been known on occasion for some attendees wear a full rig of black tie and dinner suit, but most wear neat casual possibly with a tie and jacket.  Miniature medals are optional.  Any dress that is above the club dress rules is also OK.

Shoes suitable for dancing are just about essential while London Runners are definitely OUT !!

Just like the "perth" site; a very professional and informative presentation. I was distressed to read the big switchboard and find some wonderful shipmates had passed away. Men such as Trevor Weaver, Johnny Alderton and Jeff Elvish were too good to lose. Interesting to read about Turco-solv. Greenies at Belconnen in the 60's virtually "swum" in it cleaning the huge valves in big wash basins. My main winge these days is a permanent tremor..so could turco-solv be a culprit there? All the best to everyone.

Have been checking out the 'Big Switchboard' and it seems to me the photo of 'Happy' Hammond' is a great innovation. Would it be practical/plausible to approach the N.O.K. of other honour roll members and ask them to submit a suitable, not necessarilly formal, photo of their loved ones for inclusion on the site. Happy's photo with his daughter puts a human face on the roll, not just a name and I feel it would be a fitting tribute if other shipmates were similarly honoured.

Placing the following message on behalf of Tim SCHRAER . . .

My name is Tim Schraer and I am the Fire Control Officer onboard USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63). I was trying to look up an Australian friend of mine I met back during the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Coral Sea (1992 in Sydney). I was a Chief Gunner’s Mate then and was on USS MOBILE BAY (CG 53). The person I am looking for is Graeme Neylan and he would be what you’d call a Pussers Greenie (i.e. he was a Weapons System Electrical Chief). He came on Mobile Bay to check out the 5”/54 MK45 LWGM’s since the RAN was about to get some installed on some of its ships. What he also did, was drive me around town to find a replacement bearing for my SPQ-9A azimuth drive motor. We found the bearing, which brought up my Gun RADAR and since we were going back to the Arabian Gulf for Cease Fire and Southern Watch it was a pretty big deal!

I was searching the internet and found a couple Neylan’s in the Australian phone book, but I am not sure they’re right. Anyway, thought I’d give this a shot.

V/R, Tim Schraer

Gents, I have a photo of Yarra on my desktop as wallpaper. It is post '74 as that is when I paid off. I suspect it is late 70's early 80's. MRS3 has been replaced by M22 (M44?), 293 has been removed but the pedestal is still there. 978 has been replaced by something smaller. ANSLR2 (EW) has been replaced by what looks like the same equipment on Stuart/Derwent. I have been staring at this photo for nearly six months. Now the $64 question. If my eyes do not deceive me, what I knew as a twin barrel 4.5" mount looks suspiciously like it has a single barrel. Am I right? Can anyone shed any light on this for me. Thanks. John Bolton

Many thanks to Les Figg for clearing up the 'Latin translation' which appears on the bottom of the Greenies Badge on this page. As a 'Latin challenged' non Catholic type, I have been overwhelmed by the response from a great many of my, not so challenged bretheren. I never realised there were so many Da Vinci Code officionados in our midst. Amongst other facts I have gleaned from this enquiry is that one of our number, known to some as 'The Book of Knowledge' composed the Latin inscription for our badge in recognition of the high esteem in which he holds members of the Seamans branch. Perhaps, said 'Book of Knowledge could indulge us all further by enlightening us as to the inscription on the top line of the badge, which remains illegible and lacking translation.

It is interesting to note that as late as 1986, the protection offered by the RAN for those who used the Turco bath in the basement of Russell A (Old DEFCOMMARS No-break room) was a jar of barrier cream to smear over your arms to "insulate" them from the turco. Anyone who worked the Teletype workshop in the time I was there (1984-1986)would have been offered the same solution. Playing in this stuff up to your armpits could not have been good??

I recently applied for the Pingat Jasa Malaysia medal and was subsequently informed by Canberra that I didn't qualify, as I only supported operations in the Malaysian area for 71 days, not the required 90 days. I thought, fair enough, but was facinated to learn how they calculated with such accuracy, that I was exactly 19 days short, given that I had served 5 months with the FESR in Quiberon and a similar period in Parramatta during the qualifying years of 1957 - 1966 (and lets face it, it was over 40 years ago). Apparently the information was extracted from ships logs some time ago and placed on an antiquated storage system which can sometimes be difficult to interpret/read. I have just received a phone call from Canberra advising they have re-visited my application and a found I had, in fact, served over 120 days in the appropriate area and was therefore eligible for the PJMM. If any Greenies who served a couple of tours with the FESR during the qualifying period, have been knocked back for the PJMM, it could be worth their while asking for a double check of their records. Hello All It is with regret that I noted that Bill Manning's name is on the Big Switchboard page. I served with Bill on the Melbourne and lost contact once I payed off from the mob. I ran into him again whilst serving in the RAAF at Butterworth (circa 1979-81). Bill was a RAAF police dog handler, we again lost contact after returning to Oz. The next time I met him was at RAAF Edinburgh in SA, he was still with his beloved dogs and still had his great sense of humour. Regards Chris

Hi guys Two omissions I noted when browsing through the weapons we worked on. As a gun-buster at Waterhen during 77/78 I was involved with fitting and maintaining 2" Rocket Flair Launchers (RFL) and 81mm mortars on Attack Class Patrol Boats. Some 81’s were fitted under .50 cals. They were mounted on the stern in place of the RFL. Also the new Huon Class Mine Hunters have a 30 mm DS30B rapid fire cannon (very classy piece of kit). Pussers is also trailing a fully automated, radar directed .50 cal. The system is exceptionally accurate and compact, so much so that “Septics” use this piece of kit on RHIB’s. Is it just my imagination, or is there an excessive number of fairly young men that have left us. For granted, there are some "old salts" on the list, but I know about 6 or 8 blokes on the list that didnt make 60. I've just turned 50 (joined Jan'70) and am staring to feel a bit toey.... I wonder if there's been any studies undertaken, or research done, on the life expectancy of service personnel...in particular greenies, who for years like me as an "S" rate, were exposed to all sorts of microwave and other radiation..

Les - you're SPOT on. It's the Britannia Club in Singapore - you can see Raffles Hotel across the road to the left in the aerial shot and as Steve Fisher said, just shows how much land has been reclaimed with all the tall buildings standing where the bay once was.

I have a feeling though, that the Brit Club was run by NAAFI, and was often referred to as "The NAAFI Club" by we Aussies, while the Club referred to by Les out at TERROR was called "Agnes Weston's Royal Sailors Rest"

I enlisted at NIRIMBA in 1965 as an SAA (Systems Artificer Apprentice),as all of us were, and after several months of schoolie and basic trade work we were allocated our trades (whether it was the one we joined the Navy to be or not!!!) with the rate of SAAW (Systems Artificer Apprentice Weapons),SAAP(System Artificer Apprentice Power),SAAC etc. After 5 years at the end of our apprentiship we dropped the second "A",denoting "Apprentice", in SAAW, SAAC etc to have the rate of SAW,(System Artificer Weapons) SAC etc. In the BRANCH HISTORY paragraph titelled "1962", I suggest that the sentence that includes "SAAC and SAAW (Air Coms & Air Weapons)" is wrong as the rate SAAW had nothing to do with Air. My appologies to the Birdies but I forget how their specialty was denoted.

Yamba was a great event, and we should make an effort for the diminishing numbers to get together regularly. (After all, it was 40 years ago and we arent getting any younger). A re-union each 2 years sounds good, but need to stick to the small seaside resort town concept, as our numbers are never going to be great, and it gives more scope to mingle in a small community. perhaps Merrimbula in NSW and Lakes Entrance in Victoria and similar type venues in WA and SA, to reduce the amount of travelling by members. I had a great time and would love to do it again. Cannot speak highly enough about the organisation or the committee at the Yamba reunion Peter Archibald (HMAS Snipe 1963-1965)

Hi All, I arrived back home in Santa Clara, CA on Friday (Nov. 26) after almost 3 weeks in Oz. The primary purpose of my visit at this time was to participate in ex-Sweeper Crews reunion in Yamba, NSW on Nov. 12-14. It was a huge success, with over 100 ex-sailors plus spouses/partners participating. What a trip down memory lane, meeting old crew mates that I hadn't seen since 1966! A couple of Greenies there that I had not expected were Wally Wallbank, Chris Hakkeness & Colm Phillips. Needless to say, we drank 1 or 3 beers and told a few lies :) On the way down, I over-nighted in Auckland and caught up with an old work colleague - Pete 'Darkie' Dower - that I hadn't seen since 1983. he is also an ex-Pussers Greenie, but we never crosssed paths during our service time. After the reunion I headed for Adelaide and caught up with family and friends. Whilst there, I participated in the Adelaide ex-Greenies meet & greet at the Pt Adelaide NAA. I went with John Bolton but also had some surprise meetings - Chris Rowe (last seen 1982/3), Bill Swan (last seen mid/late 60s). I tried calling 'Darkie Henwood, but got not answer. Same with Mick Duncan. I also failed to locate 'Masher' Manson, but now have a new lead. I then spent one day in Sydney on the way out to meet another old work colleague from the '80s. Unfortuantely, Pete McGurk and I weren't able to connect. As one does, during my visit I lived on seafood (which is great in all Australian coastal cities) and VB :) I bought back 3 bottles of Aussie Port to keep me going through the upgoming Holidays :) All-in-all, it was a great trip.

It's taken me a while to suss the page out but imagine my horror to find a mistake (f***up) more like it! Far down the page headed WE-SA equipts. there is a heading MRSC. As an ex OA & later WEEO this had me guessing for a while especially as "it" was fitted to Ships I had served in. For some time I wandered around, muttering to myself "MRSC" - "MRSC" What the hell was that? Then I said it out loud - 3 times, quickly and it came to me - like a blast from a two badge PO. MRS3 - Medium Range System 3. The replacement for FPS3 - Flyplane Predictor System. There was also MRS8 - a smaller system using a CRBFD -Close Range Blind Fire Director with radar 272? which could singly control X turret on the Darings. I was going to heap a pile of woe on the webmasters until I saw the list of contributors wherein one Darkie Dower was mentioned, I now understand. Keep up the good work, Yours Aye Ken White.

Thank you for the web site. Being in the USA I am somewhat isolated from my RAN past, however, we have some ex greenies who are keeping the memories alive here. Your efforts and foresight are really appreciated. I served in HMAS BRISBANE and later at RANTAU when it was at Rushcutters Bay then up to the Edgecliffe Center. My primary equipment responsibilities in BRISBANE were the CM-122/DSM which was used for analyzing and calibrating the illuminating radar which guided the TARTAR and Standard arm guided missiles to the target. The other unit I had in the same compartment was the AN/SKQ-1 Telemetry Ground Station. This monitored and recorded signals from the missile and was used to analyze the flight data including doppler shift at intercept which we used to calculate the miss-distance. Prior to BRISBANE arriving in Australia they removed the AN/DSM-55 Guided Missile Test set from the ship. That was used to test and repair missiles. The equipment was located at the aft end of the superstructore on the Mount 52 deck. I didn't see any of it listed in your equipment summary so I thought I would let you know about it.

So far the response has been great. It looks like we have 20+ couples interested in the "do" in Townsville. Remember it is a dinner-dance at the RSL so partners are required for the dance part. I am still looking at menus and entertainment. I can organise cd's for some of it but I think as the night progresses a bit of live music will be the G O. Looking forward to more responses. It is shaping up to be a real event.

I have a request for a PERTH tally band. The R&SL Chaplain here in Toowoomba Terry Egan has been looking for a PERTH tally band for ages. His story is that during the 68 TET at the battle of HUE Terry a member of the AATTV was in trouble and called for gunfire support. The support came from PERTH and he oues his life to fine shooting at the time. He asked me again on 18th Aug at the dedication of the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial here in Toowoomba if I could get him a PERTH tally band. So if any of you ex PERTH greenies has a spare tally and you would like to give it to Terry let me know so we can get it to him. Thanks Lindsay. I have applied for replacements, but suspect they will not appear in time for the reunion I am participating in at Yamba in November. Question: Is it leagal to wear replica medals (while awaiting my replacements)? If so, where can I obtain a replica RAS Badge and GSM 1962 with Borneo Clasp? Question: Can anyone recommend someone to mount my medals for me?

From Webmaster:  Heaven only knows why you'd come to this website looking for hazardous substances - we are a totally benign group of Pussers Greenies, and certainly not hazardous (although a few individuals have been known in their day to be somewhat hazardous after having consumed a moderate quantity of alcoholic beverage).
Please go to http://www.nohsc.gov.au/OHSInformation/Databases/HazardousSubstances/ and you will have access to the list to search by individual substance.  This particular list should be kept up to date by the relevant Commonwealth Government department.  Any further queries should be directed to that department.  DH

If you want any more details, email me on M.L.Rose@bigpond.com Don’t be scared of it being medical, it is just another system and you will be trained before you get to work on anything. Electrical Theory. Positive ground depends upon proper circuit functioning, which is the transmission of negative ions by retention of the visible spectral manifestation known as "smoke". Smoke is the thing that makes electrical circuits work; we know this to be true because every time one lets smoke out of the electrical system, it stops working. This can be verified repeatedly through empirical testing. When for example, the smoke escapes from an electrical component (like, say,a Lucas voltage regulator), it will be observed that the component stops working. The function of the wire harness is to carry smoke from one device to another, when the wire harness "springs a leak" and lets all the smoke out of the system, nothing works afterwards. Starter motors were frowned upon in British motorcycles for some time, largely because they consume large quantities of smoke, requiring very large wires. It has been noted that Lucas components are possibly more prone to electrical leakage than Bosch or generic Japanese electrics. Experts point out that this is because Lucas is British and all things British leak. British engines leak oil, shock absorbers and hydraulic forks and disc brakes leak fluid, British Tyres leak air, and the British defense establishment leaks secrets...so, naturally, British electrics leak smoke. From the basic concept of electrical transmission of energy in the form of smoke, a better understanding of the mysteries of electrical components--especially those of Lucas manufacture--is gained by the casual user. Can any-one also give me a definitive answer on whether or not we we issued with pussers razors in the 60's - 70's - if so did the ships canteen sell a generic govt issue razor blade (I remember the imperial leather soap). On a lighter note I would like to hear from those who remember me - I was about the longest serving OD I my time. As an ORDEM I racked up close to 4 years without a rating.

As a FCPB Sailor I have a great understanding of the role a FCPB Greeny sailor has I have utmost pride in all of them. On another note, for all of the FCPB and Attack Class Patrol Boat Sailor's, we deserve recognition (DVA) under Department of Veteran's afairs, ie.... To be accepted under DVA you must accept and have the approriate authorities agree with the certain 'thoughts' and 'formal' counselling as proposed. As a FCPB sailor and now a civy I very often have nightmares about the times where I have been threatened by a knife, it is not much fun, I can assure you. I wake up scared, and all of the memory is as routine things fellow patrol boat sailors go through. I have spoken to fellow sailors / friends who have been to Bouginville, a friend of mine is a good example, he calls it the fishing and knee boarding medal. Patrol boat service service should definately be warranted. Your response is much appreciated. Patrol Boat Sailor's go throuh a lot, the do gooders do not realise this. Patrol Bot Sailor's should get the same recognitiion / loan rights as any person, regardless of rank or position.
