Many many apologies for disabling the feedback over the last month or so.  I've just added most of the entries which were left (they were emailed to me), and I've simply deleted LOTS of spam messages, also emailed to me.

We've now added a totally NEW feedback page which has a number of anti-spam features built in.  For instance, it will reformat your email address, meaning that you must enter a correctly formatted and valid email address when leaving your feedback.

Received a letter from the Department of Defence yesterday (4th October) - the letter was dated 13th September! It informed me that my eligibility for the Australian Defence Medal was being assessed and that "the Directorate of Honours and Awards would contact me when an assessment of eligibility for Service Awards was complete". Received the medal about 3 weeks ago! Obviously was eligible! Damn, glad the Department of Defence has got their shit under control!! PS - going to Singapore for work on Saturday (was last there in 1973) and intend going to what's left of Sembewang. Hopefully will post a trip report with photos. JB

Does anyone known where the Shipboard Logs, that all of us signed during rounds etc., ended up after being posted off to DoD Canberra? Do they still use them on modern warries in the service? I have noticed while surfing the web that more than a few pussers could have used the info in them to back up their claims with the DVA and tribunals. Apparently if it's not on your medical record, in the Ships Log, or a number of officers cannot confirm it, then it didn't happen. The only other log that I know of that recorded things like NBCD conditions, blackouts, and other "incidents" of importance was our Switchboard Log. It is also of importance to confirm if a greenie was on watch, doing rounds at a certain time etc. Any clues to what happened to these logs??? cheers from Legs Hayward

I'm in Melbourne for work this week and came over early to watch the Crows play at the MCG yesterday - bugga. Finding myself at a lose end today I decided to take a trip down memory lane and visit HMAS Cerberus. I haven't been there since my PO's course in 1970. The L School building that we would have all been trained in has gone and replaced by a nice piece of lawn. More importantly, the L School theatre where Spotswood used to show the Wrans their VD movies has also gone. New Seamanship school. A, B & C blocks used for Administration. Old Chiefs & PO's block is now a coffee lounge and Travel Agent. The door that I used for my one man cabin on the ground floor of C Block is now the door to the Cerberus Library which takes in the entire ground floor of C Block. Covered parade ground at Recruit School. New Gym and swimming pool opposite Recruit School. Quite an informative Museum in what used to be the Gunnery School next to the Catholic church. New clubhouse at the golf course up near Crib Point. All in all a fun 60 minutes driving around Cerberus. If any of you get the chance to go down, I strongly suggest that you do so. JB

Good to see Greenies banding together. A brilliant website. Shame thought that there are no other Greenie Submariners names that I recognise, or any other "P"-Rates mentioned. When I say "P"-Rates I don't mean these new age technicians, I mean the Old School ETP / ETPSM. Twenty eight years of doing my job only now I have to be a "stoker" (and yes I absolutely hate it). Anyone else out there noticing the downward trend in High Power specialisation? Be good to hear from any and all.

John, Here's an explanation: 1MC: One of many communication circuits aboard a ship, this is probably the most widely recognized. When used, it is heard on every external speaker by everyone aboard the ship. 2JV: Engineering sound-powered circuit. 2MC: Engineering loudspeaker circuit. 3/4 Mile Island: USS Enterprise 4MC: Emergency circuit, goes straight to the control room of a submarine, or bridge of a ship. 5MC: Similar to the 1MC, except that it is only heard on the flight deck of an air-capable ship.

Another very successful Meet & Greet in Adelaide. 39 ex-Greenies took the time to spend a couple of hours "telling lies" with their mates. The older we get, the bigger the stories! In addition, apologies were received from another 17 ex-Greenies. I never cease to be amazed at the attitude of the SA Greenies. Trevor McKerlie made his normal 300km round trip from Spalding to join us and Chris Rowe came up from Goolwa - 150kms round trip. Both have been at every Meet & Greet. Your effort is much appreciated by all - thanks!! Another of the pleasing aspects of the day was that we had three "first-timers" who will absolutley be back in November. Gary Lang brought along two trip books from HMAS Parramatta in the 70's and 80's. These created much laughter looking at all the "hair" and a particularly svelte Gene Boron as King Neptune at one of those Crossing the Line Ceremonies that they're not allowed to have these days. Yesterday, I attended Greg Murray's funeral in Cessnock, NSW. His family was supported by a large gathering of friends; a testiment to the great bloke that he was. There was about a dozen of his Navy oppos. Anyone who knew Greg, knew that he lived life to the fullest. The service revealed to us that he was much more than a Navy man. As a parent, he surpassed the challenges before him. As a business man, he seized opportunity. As a member of his community, he was reliable and dependable. As a husband to Nat, he was her joy. I served with Greg in the US and on HOBART. As a shipmate, he was the kind of bloke we looked for in ourselves. Wish we could do it all again. Vale, Greg Crash Kennedy (Ex-CPOETW)

Hello everyone It is with enormous sadness that I tell you that my beautiful husband Greg passed away at 5.10am on Thursday 11 May 06 - 6 months and 2 weeks after his diagnosis. Greg's last few weeks were bittersweet for us all - he was struggling and tired and was also outrageously funny, kind and sweet. He knew he was going to die and told us he was dying a very happy man. He was gutsy and determined to squeeze every last drop out of life to the very end and he did. He made a promise to himself that he would get out of bed every day until the day he died and he came very close to that. He walked for the last time on Tuesday before his body said it's time to rest now. Greg had set a goal for himself that he would be here for Alex's 18th birthday. Sadly, he slipped into a coma the day before but we believe he heard everything we said. Alex told him all about his first game of snooker with Greg's cue and his first beer and we all spent the day with him. The last of the family arrived that evening and five hours after midnight Greg slipped away very quickly and peacefully at home with me, Sarah and Alex holding his hands, surrounded by our immediate family. Yesterday was the most amazing day as our immediate family and closest friends spent the day honoring Greg. We filled his room with candles and flowers and opened the door for anyone to walk in and spend time with him. There was lots of grieving and lots of laughter as we reminised about his whole life and what he meant to us. There was a wonderful healing presence surrounding our home (thanks in part to all your prayers) and I believe it was the best way we ever could have begun our journey of grief. Greg wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Sarah and Alex are amazing and they were dedicated to their dad to his last breath which ultimately was incredibly difficult to accept. While there is enormous sadness they also feel amazingly blessed to have him in their lives. The support from our immediate family has been indescribable and I truly believe we are all going to be better than o.k in the end. For me, I had really reached breaking point one hour before Greg passed away. I felt I couldn't take one more step and I believe he let my hand go then. I felt enormous relief that he was no longer suffering because he didn't deserve it. I feel at peace knowing he is at peace. I know there is a long road ahead now but I am a much stronger person for having given everything I had to make the very best of a very tragic situation. I am incredibly proud of him, me and our family. Greg's service will be held on Tuesday 16th May at 11am at St. Patricks Church, Nulkaba (Cnr of Wine Country Drive & Kerlew St). This will be followed by a burial at Aberdare Cemetary, and a wake at the property of Greg's Auntie Jean (directions on the day). There will be a viewing at Smyths Funerals (216 Wollombi Rd, Cessnock, 02 49901425) between 4pm to 5pm on Monday 15th May, for anyone who wishes to say their goodbyes to Greggy. In lieu of flowers please send donations on Greg's behalf to 'Cessnock Palliative Care, Cessnock Community Health, PO Box 154, Cessnock 2325'. Our home address is 38 Rawson Street, Cessnock. I would appreciate a call in a day or two but right now I desperately need a rest. My Mum & Dad, sister and brother-in-law (Greg's brother) are staying with me doing all the work that needs to be done. Thanks for all your support this last 6 months and I would love to see you at the service if it feels right for you. Please forward to this email to others who knew us too. Lots of Love, Natxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I will forward details on this as soon as they are known, plus authentication for inclusion on the Big Switchboard. I was fortunate enough to be in Sydney for Anzac Day this year and marched proudly behind the D39 banner. Caught up with Tex Watson, the then PO Chef who supplied the Tassie Lobster tails we devoured during a memorable luncheon in Port Arthur, but I digress. Pete McGurk did a sterling job dipping the Unit Citation colours as we passed the Cenotaph in Martin Place and later holding me up when he forgot we were drinking schooners and surreptitiously swapped us on to Bundy and Coke with Drambuie chasers, but again I digress....I was most impressed to see a bareheaded Dick Smith, standing in the rain on a George Street corner holding a simple sign which read THANK YOU. I understand he is there every year. For a multi millionaire who could have been home in bed, he sure is a class act....To all those at the Masonic Club and at the pub across the road later, I thank you for a memorable day. Swampy.

Ladies & Gents, Let me ask another dumb question - not because I think you're good at answering "dumb" questions, it's just that this forum seems to be the font of all knowledge. What are/were the physical specifications of a 4.5" projectile. Height, diameter, weight etc? Why do you ask, I hear you ask? Like some of us, I bought the WHGR Port for Xmas and it sits proudly on my bar next to my 4.5" brass casing ashtray. I am continually asked "is that life size?" For the life of me I can't remember how big the damn things were, even though I ammunitioned and de-ammunitioned both Parra & Yarra a number of times. So, how big were the damn things so that I can relate it to my "ashtray" and answer people's question. JB

As the secretary of this Association, there are times when it does require strength to pass on sad tidings, about a mate. turco was a liquid with which we cleaned the teletype 28 units. The basket would move in the turco bath and clean the unit. Of course the bath needed electricity for the fans to operate properly and straigt after the cyclone tracy had past through darwin there was not much power to be had! R/43538 I had a removal of a large tumour (ten Years) which went well then another Operation last year which didn't go so well.

Greetings all....Happy New Year. I have just got back on the air after a major computer meltdown....and yes...I did NOT have a backup. Consequently I have lost the last 2 years data including all the email contacts/addresses that I had accumulated over that period. I would be most grateful if those blokes that I have communicated with over the past 2 years could "drop me a line" so that I can get you back into my address book.. Many thanks.....(a very red faced) Mal Hughes

John Hope you get yours, but if the past is any indication don't hold your breath. I paid for a bottle of Port (cash) at the 21st. birthday celebrations in WA of HMAS "Stuart" (which I attended) The wardroom was supposed to dispatch it to my home address. STILL waiting for it. I guess it was served up at a mess dinner before it was de-commissioned

Gents, For those of you who were expecting a Port Crock for Xmas and didn't receive it (like me) I have rung the Senior Rates mess at Cerberus this morning. There is no-one there except a couple of civvies. They don't expect any Naval personnel back until 16th January. They couldn't give me a fax number, but the phone number is 03 5950 7579. I will be ringing again on the 16th to chase mine down. I note that my cheque was cleared (thank you very much!) but no port! If I get any result on the 16th I'll post a note. JB

In case you weren't aware of this program it is on SBS on Wednesday night at 1930. Inside Australia - Submariners: Part 1 (30 mins , Rated: PG) Genre: Documentary Submariners is a six-part observational style documentary series that follows the men and women aboard HMAS Rankin, the newest of Australia's Collins Class submarines, as they undertake a journey from Western Australia to Korea, Japan, Hawaii and back home again. This series looks at the submarine, a very sophisticated but slightly cantankerous piece of high tech equipment, along with a team of mostly young, keen, professionally minded individuals who have made a remarkable career choice that shuts them away from the world, their families and friends for months at a time. Part one begins in Fremantle, Western Australia where the Australian Navy's newest Collins Class submarine, HMAS Rankin, and her crew are being tested to the extreme. They need to prove that they are up to the challenge of RIMPAC, the world's biggest naval exercises being held in Hawaii. In addition, they face a more subtle challenge of overcoming the submarine's controversial reputation. JB

691 was actually a 10 channel UHF transmitter used inconjunction with the CUH UHF receiver, mainly used on smaller ships and patrol boats. 692 was a UHF transmitter used with the CUJ receiver, 10-20W output, preselectable channels(can't remember how many)over the UHF range. 693 was essentially a 692 coupled into a power amplifier to give it a 100W output for use with aircraft. AN/URC-58 was a HF USB transceiver, frequency rang 4-14MHz, capable of 100W into a whip antenna, mainly used on the Attack class patrol boats. AN/URT-24 was a HF transmitter, Frequency rang 4-30Mhz, power output 100W, secondary HF transmitter on DE's, DD's and DDG's and the main HF txer on sweepers, not sure on that though. AN/URC-9 was the UHF transceiver used on Swan, Torrens and I think Brisbane, had a 20-30W output, could be coupled to a power amplifier to achieve 100-150W output, 20 channel presectable across the UHF range with automatic tuneable antenna couplers. In case you or anyone you know is using a Dell laptop, this is for you: Dell has just announced a large battery recall due to problems with batteries that are overheating in a big way. To determine if your battery has been recalled you will need to power your computer off, remove the battery, and check the serial number against the serial numbers listed at the following Dell Link. https://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/Default.aspx
